As a PhD candidate at the Complexity Science Hub and a PhD student in Economic and Social Sciences at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Guillermo is part of the MigraCapax project, where his research aims to create policy insights into the dynamics and the socio-economic impacts of migration and human mobility.
With a keen interest in economic geography, spatial analysis, and network science, his primary research focuses on the rural-urban divide through the lens of urban science, examining cities as magnets for human mobility and their relationship with labor markets. He is also deeply interested in disaster-induced migration, particularly in response to the increasing frequency of natural disasters.
Guillermo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona. He furthered his studies with a Master’s degree in Engineering and Policy Analysis from Delft University of Technology, and a Master’s in Philosophy for Contemporary Challenges from the Open University of Catalonia.
Prior to his doctoral studies, Guillermo served as a consultant for the City Resilience Global Programme at UN-Habitat, where he collaborated with local governments to enhance urban and territorial resilience. He also held a fellowship at the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, focusing on science diplomacy, and a fellowship at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth focusing on SDG Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities.
